Intrusive Thoughts
Guys,
There is absolutely nothing at all keeping any of us from doing bad things other than our own beliefs and set of morals. There is also nothing forcing us to do anything that we don’t want to do. There is no imaginary force directing us either way. YOU and only YOU get to make those choices. This may be a perfectly horrifying thought for most of you, but it is important. The only thing that separates us from people who do carry out these thoughts is the desire to act upon them. Don’t misinterpret desire for impulse. These are two different things entirely. Desire means that you would take pleasure in carrying out your horrific thoughts and continue to do it for fun. Impulses are triggered by thoughts and the fear associated with that particular thought.
If you feel guilt, or sickness, or anxiety as a result of the thought then you are dealing with anxiety disorder (Pure O). I could be an Axe murderer if I wanted to. So could any of us. It would simply mean we’d have to pick up an axe and hit someone with it. We all have the freedom to act on any thought that we have no matter how despicable. This is why good thoughts as well as bad thoughts should be controlled. Thoughts are just random noise in your mind that you can play with at will. You can change them, make them scary, or make them happy. You have 100% control over your thoughts if you practice controlling them. If you don’t, your thoughts will become noisier and noisier until you stumble across a particularly scary one that you otherwise would have simply dismissed. This is when the anxiety starts. Fear leads to adrenaline rush and panic which creates a fear of that particular thought. From that point on, that thought alone is all it takes to trigger anxiety and panic.
The only way to battle these thoughts is to face them directly for what they are, useless. As you become aware of how random and stupid most of the thoughts that go through your head are from day to day, you will become amazed at how you get anything done at all. As you learn to control your thoughts, you will notice your mind will quiet and you can take control of your thoughts for good. Anxiety may linger on, but it is powerless without the negative thought processes that typically trigger it.
Again, you get to make all the decisions in your life as scary as that may seem. This empowerment will actually help you as you realize that you get to chose what you do from crossing the street to beating someone with a baseball bat. Always remember, YOU have all the power!
Take care,
OE
I have exactly what you describe. Tonight I read something that spiked my anxiety. I know it will fade, but i am finding it hard.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write all of what you do. It truly is amazing and being a fellow engineer, I understand what you go through.
Please don’t stop writing, I am reading.. It’s great stuff!
You know. I think the over analytical personality types such as engineers tend to have a propensity to have anxiety disorders. I think it is just how rigid our way of thinking can be… LOL. Anyway, no problem at all as far as the writing is concerned. I just hope that I can help others in some small way.
Take care,
OE
